Stop the 'Monsanto Protection Act' and Other Dangerous Riders!
There's still time to let legislators know that we won't tolerate Congress's latest proposed giveaways, including immunity from federal law, to Monsanto and the rest of the biotech bullies.
Here's what's at stake. Attached to the Agricultural Appropriations Bill is the "Farmers Assurance Provision" (Section 733) which is nothing more than a sneak attack on American farmers, consumers and the environment. If passed, this rider, aptly renamed the "Monsanto Protection Act," would give Monsanto immunity from federal law by allowing the biotech industry to plant genetically modified crops, even if a federal court has ordered the planting be halted until an Environmental Impact Statement is completed.
On the Farm Bill side, Monsanto lobbyists have bought themselves several anti-regulatory riders that would effectively gut the USDA's ability to regulate the use of genetically engineered organisms (GMOs). The riders would speed up the review and approval process for new GE crops, and authorize the USDA to consider exempting certain GE crops from any review at all.
Now that Congress has returned, both bills are on the agenda. The Agriculture Appropriations could become part of an Omnibus Appropriations Bill and the Farm Bill could be included in a deficit-reduction agreement to avoid the "fiscal cliff.
Don't let Monsanto get away with this latest attack on farmers, consumers and the environment!
Whole Foods to Require GMO Labeling by 2018
NaturalNews Saturday, March 09, 2013
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger
Editor of NaturalNews.com
It's a brilliant move for Whole Foods, given that by 2018, anyone who wants to be certain whether they are avoiding GMOs will gladly choose to do all their shopping at Whole Foods. After all, if Albertson's (for example) doesn't require GMO labeling while Whole Foods does, in which store would you rather shop? Whole Foods!
But the real story here is everything that led up to this. The turning point in all this was, in my opinion, the 2012 release of the Organic Spies video in which Whole Foods employees were caught on camera lying to customers about GMOs.
Natural News broke this story and was instrumental in getting the video posted on our free speech protected video service TV.naturalnews.com, a public location which could not be easily banned by Whole Foods. YouTube, by comparison, routinely bans videos that blow the whistle on dishonest corporate behavior, but TV.naturalnews.com hosts whistleblowing videos and has so far resisted all attempts to have those videos banned or removed. (We even host most of the Jesse Ventura Conspiracy Theory series, including the "memory-holed" FEMA camp episode that has disappeared everywhere else.)
This Organic Spies video proved to be hugely embarrassing to Whole Foods, causing an uproar across the 'net and causing many customers to start shopping elsewhere such as Green PolkaDot Box, which avoids carrying any products containing GMOs.
Following the Organic Spies video, InfoWars reporters Aaron Dykes and Melissa Melton launched a breakthrough video investigation that exposed the "big Whole Foods lie" of claiming "Nothing artificial, ever" on the side of their stores while secretly selling unlabeled GMOs in their stores. We also documented the "Nothing artificial, ever" fraud here on Natural News. GMOs are, of course, "artificial." They are engineered by man, not created by nature. In this video, Whole Foods was caught in yet another blatant, embarrassing lie.
The Prop 37 campaign was also in full swing during all this, and Whole Foods refused to contribute a single dollar to the California ballot measure. After being confronted and publicly shamed, a Whole Foods executive did quietly contribute $25,000, but only after being called out for failing to support the campaign.
Alternative media holds Whole Foods' feet to the fire
Add all this up and you get the impression that Whole Foods was actively opposed to GMO labeling. And it was the alternative media that was holding Whole Foods' feet to the fire. While the mainstream media refused to even touch the issue (because mainstream media is nothing more than a dumbed-down, cartoon-level disinfo broadcast for morons and sheeple), the alternative media plowed full steam ahead. Natural News, InfoWars, Mercola, the Organic Consumers Association, the Institute for Responsible Technology and many other organizations kept hammering the issue, and tens of millions of grassroots activists made their voices heard in a resounding way.
Through various back channels, Whole Foods got the message loud and clear that there was no way they were going to be able to stop this. The alternative media can't be easily bought off because the key people who run the alternative media aren't in it for money (unlike the mainstream media).
If Whole Foods didn't get fully behind the mandatory labeling of GMOs, it was going to find itself in a runaway confidence crisis. After all, if health-conscious customers can't trust Whole Foods to be transparent with them about what's really in their foods, there's not much of a reason to shop at Whole Foods, is there?
Whole Foods capitulates and decides to require labeling
Sometime between November 2012 and March 2013, Whole Foods executives made a decision to finally get behind GMO labeling. They announced that all the foods they carry would need to be labeled with GMO content by 2018. As StreetInsider.com reports:
Whole Foods Market announced... that, by 2018, all products in its U.S. and Canadian stores must be labeled to indicate whether they contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs). It is the first national grocery chain to set a deadline for full GMO transparency.
On the surface, this was immediately heralded as a highly ethical leadership decision by the market leader in health food retailing, but behind the scenes an entirely different equation was being calculated. Whole Foods CEO John Mackey never makes a decision unless it's in his financial interest to do so, and as his history of false-identity Wild Oats blogging shows, he's not beyond engaging in wild deceptions in order to make more money for himself and his investors.
Ultimately, Mackey and the Whole Foods executives realized what I've been trying to tell them for months: That if they didn't get behind GMO labeling, they were going to lose everything. Promoting GMO labeling isn't simple a choice of ethics for Whole Foods, it's a matter of economic survival.
And what made that decision carry weight? The alternative media.
Whole Foods decision is huge victory for alternative media and grassroots activism
Without Natural News, Organic Consumers Association, Jeffrey Smith, Info Wars and millions of grassroots activists pounding this issue day after day, the cost of Whole Foods doing nothing would not have been high enough to alter the equation. Whole Foods made this decision precisely because of Natural News, the Organic Spies, Info Wars and other alternative media organizations. Because Whole Foods knows that we will not drop this issue and we were going to keep hammering this issue in a very public manner if they did not come out and announce support for GMO labeling.
So in one sense, Whole Foods deserves credit for doing the right thing in this announcement, but at another level they were forced into that position by people like you, the readers of the alternative media.
Whole Foods will deny all this, of course. They will claim this decision was nothing more than a response to the requests of their many customers. But those requests were largely caused by people learning about this entire issue from the alternative media, which has really become the new mainstream media because we are the only sources of real news these days (and we're not run by the White House or mega corporations).
The way Whole Foods explains all this, however, they made this decision solely because they are impressively angelic in their hearts and minds. As Whole Foods President A.C. Gallo says: "We have always believed quality and transparency are inseparable and that providing detailed information about our products is part of satisfying and delighting the millions of people who place their trust in Whole Foods Market each day."
That quote is a complete load of bull, of course. In truth, Whole Foods has systematically deceived its customers about GMOs for many years. It has placed signs on its stores that are blatantly false and misleading: "Nothing artificial, ever!" And it has waged a campaign of total disinformation about the GMOs that continue to be sold right now in not just the food products, but also the supplements it retails. (Yes, many supplements sold at Whole Foods are loaded with genetically modified ingredients.)
So don't let Whole Foods fool you into thinking this is all about "doing the right thing." If anything, Whole Foods has decided to do the right thing only as a last resort, after being forced to do so by the alternative media and grassroots activists. As Winston Churchill famously said in the European theater of World War II, "Americans can always be counted on to do the right thing... after they have exhausted all other possibilities."
Ultimately, it's hard-working people like Ronnie Cummins and Jeffrey Smith who really deserve the credit for Whole Foods making this move.
That's why all this is a victory for grassroots activism over corporate deception. This shows the power of the alternative media to connect people in ways that achieve real change. This shows that when push comes to shove, the alternative media is in many ways more powerful than the lying mainstream media which has engaged in a shameful GMO cover-up.
GMO Salmon and 13 Other GMO Crops Awaiting Approval
Right now the Obama administration is considering the approval AquaBounty’s GMO salmon and 13 new genetically engineered crops. Now is our time to stand up and raise our voice!
On December 21, the Obama administration gave a clear signal that the AquaBounty GMO salmon is on the verge of being approved. Once again, the FDA is putting corporate science over public health.
As the first genetically engineered animal sold direct for human consumption, AquaBounty’s GMO salmon fails to meet basic requirements for safety test for human health and environmental protection. Currently the FDA has a 60-day comment period on their Environmental Assessment that started on December 26th, please lend your voice.
Copy and paste this link to tell President Obama and the FDA to reject AquaBounty’s GMO salmon.
At the same time, 13 new GMO crops are currently awaiting approval at the USDA, including Dow Chemical Agent Orange 2,4-D corn and soy and a non-browning GMO apple.
One thig is for sure, now is the time to stand up for our basic rights to know what’s in our food and for family farmers. Democracy is like a muscle, you either use it or lose it.

The USDA Admits Our Food Contains GMO Source: GreenAmerica.org
According to a recent article published in Green American magazine, 93 percent of Americans believe that
genetically modified foods should be labeled. However, only USDA-certified organic products cannot
intentionally contain genetically modified organisms (GMO), so identifying GMO foods and products in a
typical U.S. grocery store is difficult. The following information can help.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirms that large percentages of the nation’s crops were
genetically modified in 2011: 94 percent of conventional soy and soy products; 90 percent of cottonseed, a
common ingredient in margarine, salad dressings and oils; and 88 percent of corn, contained in breakfast cereals,
corn flour products such as chips and tortillas, high-fructose corn syrup, soups and condiments. More than 90
percent of the U.S. canola crop also is now genetically modified.
The Independent, one of England’s leading newspapers, reported in 1999 that the artificial sweetener aspartame
has been made with genetically modified bacteria since 1965. Aspartame, inconclusively linked with numerous
health risks, is present in more than 6,000 products, including diet sodas. Two other ubiquitous artificial
sweeteners, Nutrasweet and Equal, also contain aspartame.
The USDA further lists 95 percent of the 2009 U.S. sugar beet crop, used to produce conventional sugar, as
genetically modified. Non-GMO alternative sweeteners include pure cane sugar and honey from organic farms.
The Traitor Boycott: Tell Naked Juice to Stop Lying
Naked Juice probably doesn't want you to know that it's owned by Pepsi, which donated $2.5 million to help defeat Prop 37, the California Right to Know Genetically Modified Food Act.
But there's a lot more the product that sells itself as "100% juice," "all natural" and "non-GMO" doesn't want you to know. Like that it contains genetically modified soy. And synthetic compounds such as calcium pantothenate, produced from formaldehyde. And Fibersol-2, a synthetic digestion-resistant fiber produced by Archer Daniels Midland. Naked Juice probably doesn't want you to know that it's full of fructooligosaccharides, a synthetic fiber and sweetener, and inulin, an artificial and invisible fiber added to foods to increase fiber content without the typical fiber mouth-feel.
This week, let's let Naked Juice know that we're all done with its product until it cleans up its act. And, oh yeah, we think PepsiCo and Naked Juice should support I-522, the Washington State initiative to label GMOs. Please use the link below to write to Mike Torres, senior director of Communications for PepsiCo. And please join the hundreds of others who are publicly boycotting Naked Juice on its Facebook page.
November 15, 2012 JOIN NATIONWIDE BOYCOTT
The Organic Consumers Association, OCA, is calling on consumers to boycott these organic and "natural" traitor brands:
PepsiCo (Donated $2.5M): Naked Juice, Tostito’s Organic, Tropicana Organic
Kraft (Donated $2M): Boca Burgers and Back to Nature
Safeway (Member of Grocery Manufacturers Association, which donated $2M):“O” Organics
Coca-Cola (Donated $1.7M): Honest Tea, Odwalla
General Mills (Donated $1.2M): Muir Glen, Cascadian Farm, Larabar
Con-Agra (Donated $1.2M): Orville Redenbacher’s Organic, Hunt’s Organic, Lightlife, Alexia
Kellogg’s (Donated $791k): Kashi, Bear Naked, Morningstar Farms, Gardenburger
Smucker’s (Donated $555k ): R.W. Knudsen, Santa Cruz Organic
Unilever (Donated $467k): Ben & Jerry’s
Dean Foods (Donated $254k): Horizon, Silk, White Wave
Tell these companies that if they want your loyalty - and your grocery dollars - they must do two things:
1. Speak out publicly in favor of the pending GMO Labeling Ballot Initiative (I-522) in Washington State in 2013, as well as the pending GMO labeling bills coming up in Vermont and other states.
2. Contribute as much or more money to the Yes on I-522 Campaign in Washington than their parent corporations spent to defeat Prop 37 in California.
Prop 37 was narrowly defeated, by dirty money and dirty tricks. But it spawned a huge, national consumer movement that is fired up and more determined than ever to fight this battle until we win the right to know if our food has been genetically modified. We're already collecting signatures in Washington State, talking to legislators in Vermont and Connecticut. A 30-state coalition is formulating a plan to collaborate on GMO-labeling laws and initiatives.
You are a part of this movement, and today we're calling on you, on the millions of consumers who were outraged by the NO on 37's dirty campaign, to send a clear message to the traitor brands who helped kill Prop 37, in the only language they understand: lost profits and lower sales.
Join the boycott by not buying products from the above companies.
(Oct 28) The Big 6 - Monsanto, BASF, Bayer, Dow, DuPont and Syngenta - far and away dominate the global seed and pesticide markets; they are actively opposing Prop 37. In filings released recently, each of the corporations "made contributions of at least $2 million, with Monsanto's contribution alone totaling more than $7 million," according to Pesticde Action Network, in a press release.
Dr. Charles Benbrook, who conducted a study using federal government data, the Big 6 likely don't want you to know that genetically engineered crops drive up the use of dangerous pesticides while they open more markets for them as well (as usual, "follow the money").
Benbrook found that GM crops have "increased pesticide use by over 400 million pounds in the United States over the past fifteen years," said the PAN statement. Big 6 donations, so far those committed to defeating it have ponied up in excess of $37 million; they've spent $19 million with Sacramento public relations firms and on aggressive television advertising and paid mailings to voters.

(Oct 4) Whole Foods CEO John Mackey confirmed in a blog post three days ago that Whole Foods knowingly sells Monsanto GM corn in numerous products. And yet at the same time Whole Foods refuses to make its day-to-day shoppers aware of this horrifying fact. He says:
The YouTube video showing our store Team Members giving conflicting responses to a question about GMOs reminds us that while we try to keep all our 70,000 Team Members up-to-speed on the latest information, clearly we need to do more. Some products in our stores DO contain GMOs... SIGN PETITION Whole Foods & GMO
As a result, masses of Whole Foods customers and even employees are operating under the illusion that Whole Foods sells no products containing genetically engineered ingredients. This was confirmed by the recent Organic Spies video which was censored by YouTube because it dared to tell the truth about Whole Foods.
Whole Foods shoppers have been betrayed
Imagine the shock of brutal reality when Whole Foods shoppers learn the truth. They will be appalled. They will feel lied to... betrayed. Wasn't Whole Foods supposed to be a place of TRUST? Where the food could be trusted? Where people don't have to conduct their own investigations of all the ingredients because Whole Foods has already done that for them? Isn't that why people are willing to pay a premium for the groceries they buy at Whole Foods?
It turns out that Whole Foods sells a surprising amount of the same GMO-infested processed junk foods that you can buy everywhere else: Safeway, Kroger, etc. It's all emblazoned with the "Natural!" claim, of course, which usually means "Contains GMOs" because the word "natural" has absolutely no regulatory meaning whatsoever. And instead of doing something about it, Whole Foods CEO Mackey just says GMOs are "pervasive" as if there's nothing that can be done about it. Does he not understand that Whole Foods could simply refuse to BUY foods containing GMOs?
Sept.19, 2012 (NaturalNews) Eating genetically modified corn (GM corn) and consuming trace levels of Monsanto's Roundup chemical fertilizer caused rats to develop horrifying tumors, widespread organ damage, and premature death. That's the conclusion of a shocking new study that looked at the long-term effects of consuming Monsanto's genetically modified corn.
The study has been deemed "the most thorough research ever published into the health effects of GM food crops and the herbicide Roundup on rats." News of the horrifying findings is spreading like wildfire across the internet, with even the mainstream media seemingly in shock over the photos of rats with multiple grotesque tumors... tumors so large the rats even had difficulty breathing in some cases. GMOs may be the new thalidomide.
From the Daily Mail: "The animals on the GM diet suffered mammary tumors, as well as severe liver and kidney damage. The researchers said 50 percent of males and 70 percent of females died prematurely, compared with only 30 percent and 20 percent in the control group."
Here are some of the shocking findings from the study:
• Up to 50% of males and 70% of females suffered premature death.
• Rats that drank trace amounts of Roundup (at levels legally allowed in the water supply) had a 200% to 300% increase in large tumors.
• Rats fed GM corn and traces of Roundup suffered severe organic damage including liver damage and kidney damage.
• The study fed these rats NK603, the Monsanto variety of GM corn that's grown across North America and widely fed to animals and humans. This is the same corn that's in your corn-based breakfast cereal, corn tortillas and corn snack chips.
"This research shows an extraordinary number of tumors developing earlier and more aggressively - particularly in female animals. I am shocked by the extreme negative health impacts." - Dr Michael Antoniou, molecular biologist, King's College London.
"We can expect that the consumption of GM maize and the herbicide Roundup, impacts seriously on human health." - Dr Antoniou.
"This is the first time that a long-term animal feeding trial has examined the impact of feeding GM corn or the herbicide Roundup, or a combination of both and the results are extremely serious. In the male rats, there was liver and kidney disorders, including tumors and even more worryingly, in the female rats, there were mammary tumors at a level which is extremely concerning; up to 80 percent of the female rats had mammary tumors by the end of the trial." - Patrick Holden, Director, Sustainable Food Trust.

Say it Isn't So: Organic Brands Backing the Campaign to Defeat GMO Labeling in CA.
- By Katherine Paul
Organic Consumers Association, Aug 9, 2012
The next time you take a swig of Odwalla's Organic Carrot Juice, or munch on a bowl of Orville Redenbacher's Organic popcorn, take note: A lot of popular organic and all-natural brands are made by companies that are spending thousands of dollars to defeat Proposition 37, the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act.
Donations are pouring into the campaign to defeat Prop 37. Among the big donors are companies like J.M. Smucker, Hormel Foods, Kellogg Co., Coca-Cola North America and PepsiCo. - companies that make a fortune marketing 'natural' and organic brands with slogans like "We're good to the earth
All of these companies are members of the powerful Washington, DC-based Grocery Manufacturer's Association (GMA), a multi-billion-dollar trade association which represents America's $1.2 trillion "Big Food" industry. The GMA itself has already pitched in $375,000
to the anti-labeling campaign. And it's still early in the game.
The GMA has more than 300 dues-paying members
, many of whom are purveyors of popular 'natural' and organic brands. These companies have either developed or acquired those brands in order to tap into the growing market for organic and "natural" foods: Annual sales of "natural" food products are estimated at $50 billion, organic at $30 billion.
We assume all GMA members oppose Prop 37, or they wouldn't approve GMA's hefty donations to the anti-labeling campaign. Those members include Starbucks, which sells a number of organic coffee brands, and Kraft, maker of Boca Burgers. Safeway, Inc. is also a member of GMA. The supermarket chain pockets annual sales of $400 million
from its store-owned O-Organics brand. You would think a company that markets "Ingredients for Life
" might stand up in favor of no GMO ingredients?
Safeway is an assumption, but when it comes to a long list of other GMA members, no assumptions are necessary. Here's a list of food companies, all GMA members, and all marketers of "natural" and organic brands, who have directly donated
to the campaign against GMO labeling - over and above the $375,000 the GMA has contributed on behalf of all its members.
- Tostito's Organic
- Tropicana Organic
- Naked Juice

August 16, 2012 Monsanto’s Gang Dumps $25 Million into NO on 37 Campaign to Label GMOs
Yesterday it was revealed that the biotech industry and Big Ag have already dumped $25 million - $4.2 million from chemical and seed giant Monsanto alone - into the campaign to defeat Proposition 37 in California, the November 6 citizens ballot initiative that will require genetically engineered foods to be labeled and put an end to the deceptive industry practice of marketing GMO-tainted foods as “natural” or “all natural.”
The California Secretary of State just released the latest Who’s Who of donors to the NO on 37 and YES on 37 campaigns. Topping the list of donors to the NO on 37 anti-labeling campaign is Monsanto and the rest of the Biotech agri-toxics gang, aided and abetted by processed food manufacturers and supermarket chains. As of Aug. 15, they’ve raised more than $25 million to keep you from knowing what’s in your food. And of course the November 6 election is still more than two months away. On our side, YES on 37, we’ve raised $2.7 million with several million more in pledges.
Who are the top donors on our side, calling for truthful labels on GMOs? The top two donors are Mercola.com, the nation’s largest network of natural health consumers, and the Organic Consumers Fund (OCF), the allied grassroots lobbying arm of the Organic Consumers Association. Mercola.com has already donated $800,000 to the cause, while the OCF has donated approximately $700,000 so far, almost all of which has come in the form of small donations from organic food consumers. Other large donors to the YES on 37 campaign so far include Nature’s Path, Dr. Bronner’s, Lundberg Family Farms, Eden Foods, and Organic Valley, leading brands in the organic industry.
It’s clear that the NO on 37 folks have a lot at stake – namely, grotesque profits. After Monsanto, the top donor is DuPont Pioneer, at more than $2.4 million. Pepsi/Frito Lay has moved into the no. 3 spot, at more than $1.7 million. In all, nine companies have pitched in more than $1 million each – most of them biotech and pesticide companies, along with Pepsi, Nestle and Coca-Cola.
Total number of major donors so far to the NO on Prop 37 campaign? 45 – all with ties to the biotech, pesticide and Big Food industries. Total number of major donors to the YES campaign? 18 – none with ties to biotech, pesticides or Big Food.
Monsanto, the Biotech Goliath, has indeed roared, but the food fight of our lives has just begun. Goliath has more money, but David, our champion on the battlefield, has truth and grassroots power backing him up. How much more will the Biotech Bullies and Big Ag spend to keep voters in the dark about chemical and energy intensive GMO food? Please stay tuned from now until Nov. 6. We’ll keep you informed and motivated to join OCA, OCF, and our allies in this historic battle that will determine the future of food and farming, not only in North America, but across the world.
2012 July (NaturalNews) While millions of Americans were busy celebrating freedom from tyranny during the recent Independence Day festivities, Monsanto was actively trying to thwart that freedom with new attacks on health freedom. It turns out that the most evil corporation in the world has quietly attached riders to both the 2012 Farm Bill and the 2013 Agriculture Appropriations Bill that would essentially force the federal government to approve GMOs at the request of biotechnology companies, and prohibit all safety reviews of GMOs from having any real impact on the GMO approval process.
The Farm Bill that passed the Senate in late June 2012, and was a missed opportunity to create real change by taking on the corporate control of our food.
One important vote on the amendment to allow states to label genetically engineered foods failed, with 73 Senators voting against it, and essentially casting their vote for Monsanto.
Take this opportunity to hold your elected officials accountable for their vote on genetically engineered food labels: If your Senator voted for your right to know, thank them; if they voted against it, let them know that you're disappointed, and that this is an issue you care about.
